TIPS FOR CAREGIVERS
by: LOUISE MOHARDT, RN, C -- GERIATRIC SUPPORT SERVICES
  • Plan some time for yourself. It is impossible to continue
to be a giving and caring person if you are overtired and overwhelmed.
  • Be calm and supportive, move and speak slowly. Allow time to respond.
  • Provide one step directions. Use familiar words and cues.
  • Improve communication by using eye contact,
visual cues (point, wave, smile), and touch (hold hand, hug).
  • Provide a consistent daily routine.
  • Do not argue, or try to reason.
  • Keep choices very simple (yes/no questions, chocolate or vanilla).
  • Make direct requests. Instead of “would you like to sit down?” say “It’s time to sit down.”
  • Plan for your own future.
  • Avoid stressful situations such as large groups, unneeded noise, failures
(do not try to teach new skills or ask to try harder).
  • Use distraction (not correction) to change unwanted behaviors.
  • Take care of yourself.
